JAZZ BAND MUSIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
The RLMS Jazz Band will be participating in the Jazz Music Performance
Assessment on Thursday, February 18 at SEMINOLE HIGH School. We have been
assigned to play at 7:30pm that evening. I would like all students to meet at Seminole HS
in front of the auditorium by 6:00pm in their full band uniform. I will need help
transporting ALL of the rhythm equipment including drum set, keyboard, bass, amp, etc.
Please let me know if you are willing and able to help in the transport of anything.
Family and friends are welcome to attend this event.
The band will perform at 7:30PM. Students will be released to their parents once all
equipment has been loaded.

The Altamonte Summer Band Camp - June 14 - July 1
Volunteers Needed for the 2011 - 2012 School Year - Several band board members will be moving on as their children graduate. The band board meets once a month to help coordinate all activities for the band...everything from uniform fittings to fundraising to helping coordinate all of the band events. For those who ordered uniforms for Concert / Advanced Bands:
Sacino's uniforms will be distributed in class on Monday. We will put instructions on each bag, but as a reminder, for each student that ordered pants and shirt, please try on those pieces ASAP. If there are any problems they should contact Sacino's directly. Sacino's is now located in Seminole Town Center Mall. They charge $4 for hemming pants.
We do not yet know if the shirts ordered for Beginning Band will also be ready...if they are, we'll send another email so that you know to look for them.

Several important updates to share...
Fundraiser - Our annual fundraiser launched this last week. In class, your child received the information packet for the Ultimate Gourmet from 1st Place Fundraising. Their products receive rave reviews each year from our families and we appreciate your support during this important fundraiser. Sales should continue through October 16th. A couple of announcements:
- Quickly approaching on October 9th is Middle School Night at both Lyman and Lake Mary. Ms. Couch has created an information sheet for 8th graders who will be attending Lyman: http://www.rocklakeband.org/documents/Lyman8thGrade.pdf . more details for Lake Mary will be announced shortly. We know the students really enjoy these events and we ask that you share any photos that you take (send to admin@rocklakeband.org).
- We are behind in collecting several high priority forms. If you have not done so, please send these in ASAP:

- Our big fundraiser for the year will be launched on October 2nd. We are updating our fundraising page on the website (http://rocklakeband.org/id20.htm) which will include all the information on the program and the exciting prizes your child can earn. This fundraiser is vital to the success of our Superior-rated program and one thing we work had to do is to make sure that everyone participates AND that we strive to make sure we can reward all of the students. To that end, we are in need of prize donations. Please look to see if you can maybe cash in some credit card points for a gift card, or ask your employer to make a donation of anything that the students would enjoy receiving. A busy weekend....
- This Friday, September 18th, is Middle School Night for those 8th graders who will be attending Lake Brantley next year. For parents who are attending, we'd love for you to send any pictures you take to Mike (admin@rocklakeband.org) for posting on the website. - This Saturday, September 19th, are the All-State Auditions, which are being held at Deltona High School. Here are two very important documents concerning the auditions:

- September 18th is Middle School Night for those 8th graders who will be attending Lake Brantley next year. If you are attending, we have additional information about that evening that we need for you to review.

UNIFORM PAYMENT REMINDER
We have completed the process of measuring participants in both Concert and Advanced Bands for uniforms and shoes. This is a friendly reminder to return the order form and payment NO LATER THAN Monday, August 31st. This includes payments for full uniforms, individual uniform pieces and shoes. Forms can be downloaded from the band's uniform page on the website: http://rocklakeband.org/id33.htm
Checks should be made payable to Rock Lake Band Boosters and put in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and Band.
Note the following:
- Even if you do not need individual uniform items or shoes, please initial and return the order form acknowledging that you do not need to place an order.
- If your child already has a uniform, please verify that none of the pieces are missing and that everything still fits properly. If anything needs to be replaced, pieces may be ordered separately.
- If your child already has uniform pants but they need to be altered, please contact Sacino's in Seminole Towne Center. Alteration fee is $4.00 per pair.
We appreciate your help in returning payment and forms as quickly as possible so that we may place the order. If you have questions, please give us a call.

- A reminder that on Thursday night, August 27th, at 6:30 pm in the gymnasium, we will be hosting a beginning band parent meeting for parents and students new to the RLB program. In addition, since many may still need to rent instruments, we have invited the local music stores to come onsite to accept orders and answer any questions you may have.
- Free All-State Preparation Clinic! This Saturday, UCF is hosting a free clinic for those 7th and 8th grade students participating in All-State tryouts. Information about the clinic can be found here: http://www.music.ucf.edu/camps/forms/2009-Allstate-clinic.pdf Please note that they are requesting registration asap.
- Email contact information for the Rock Lake Band Boosters and the various committee chairpersons can be found here: http://rocklakeband.org/id31.htm . You'll be receiving ongoing updates through these emails and the website, but if you ever should have a question or want to volunteer, please do not hesitate to reach out to the booster board. Welcome to the 2009 - 2010 school year and the band program at Rock Lake Middle School! We are extremely happy to welcome Ms. Kerry Couch as our new Band Director. Ms. Couch is no stranger to the music programs in Seminole County (some might know her from her work with the low brass at recent summer camps) and the booster board is working hard with Ms. Couch to ensure a successful launch for the new year. As we start the new year, there are a couple of items we need to alert you to:
- On Thursday night, August 27th, at 6:30 pm in the gymnasium, we will be hosting a beginning band parent meeting for parents and students new to the RLB program. - Each year we are required to collect an updated Release and Consent form. This was included in the the letters mailed home to concert and advanced band students, but if you need a copy, you can download one here: http://www.rocklakeband.org/documents/Medical_Release_and_Consent.pdf Please help us by filling this out and sending in with your child during the first week of school.
- We are doing uniform fittings for all members of Concert and Advanced Band this week. Concert band will be on August 26th and Advanced Band will be on August 27th. Beginning Band students will have their t-shirt sizing in September. On the website, we have copies of forms available:

We appreciate your assistance as the booster organization is a critical component of our "Superior-rated" band program. Along with the fundraisers we do during the year, the boosters help support new instrument purchase and repairs, acquisition of music, purchasing locks for the band locker room, mailing out of newsletters and maintaining the website, coordinating trips and performances, and much more.

We will be hosting our new parent orientation meeting on Thursday, August 27th at 6:30. During this meeting, you'll learn all about our band program, what you need to now about renting an instrument, uniforms, lessons, and more.

As a parent of a student participating in the Rock Lake Band program, at some point you might volunteer some time towards the success of our program. This might be through attending a booster meeting, working as a chaperone, or helping to coordinate our fundraising efforts. (The list is of volunteer opportunities is pretty big.)
All volunteers must register as a Dividend with the Seminole County School District. This is a very simple process which must be done EACH YEAR. The school district website is now available for the 2009 - 2010 school year. Please visit the following site to complete the process for the upcoming school year:
With so many students in our program this year, you can see how we really come to depend on our volunteers. It goes without saying that volunteering with the Rock Lake Band is an extremely rewarding experience....you're a member of a very special community and you really have an opportunity to contribute to the development of our children.

Hard to believe that it is almost July! We hope everyone has had an enjoyable start to their summer break. We have a few updates to pass along to you:
Summer Band Camp: Our summer band camp is well under way and the students are enjoying the challenging music that they are working on. At the end of camp, there will be a concert which is open to everyone. It will be held on July 2nd at Teague's gymnasium and will start at 7:00 PM. Students will receive an update as to what time they need to show up. Letters Being Mailed Home: In the next few weeks, you'll be receiving a letter with information about the next school year in band. Also included in the letter is a Medical Release and Consent Form and a Family Info Form. Those forms are extremely important and we'll need them completed for the school year.

You might notice something different about rocklakeband.org??? With the 2009-2010 school year, the management of our website is transitioning to Mike Kazazis (he was the admin several years ago). The look and feel might be different, but you'll still find all the information you'll ever need on our site. We would like to thank Susan Bethel for all that she has done for rocklakeband.org during the last two years.
We'll be tinkering with the site over the next few days, so you might come across a link that doesn't work or a typo. Mike can be reached at admin@rocklakeband.org should you have any comments or suggestions about what you'd like to see on the website.
